Compass OperationPress the on/off button once to turn the compasson or off. When the ignition and the compass feature are on, thecompass will show two character boxes for approximatelytwo seconds. After two seconds, the mirror will displaythe current compass heading.Compass CalibrationIf after two seconds the display does not show a compassheading (N for North for example), there may be a strongmagnetic field interfering with the compass. Suchinterference may be caused by a magnetic antennamount, note pad holder or similar object. If the letter Cshould ever appear in the compass window, the compassmay need calibration. The mirror can be calibrated by driving the vehicle incircles at 5 mph (8 km/h) or less until the display readsa direction. The compass can be placed in calibration mode bypressing and holding the on/off button until a C is shownin the compass display.Compass VarianceCompass variance is the difference between earth’smagnetic north and true geographic north. If the mirroris not adjusted for compass variance, your compasscould give false readings. The mirror is set in zone eight upon leaving the factory. It will be necessary to adjust the compass tocompensate for compass variance if you live outsidezone eight. Under certain circumstances, such as a longdistance, cross-country trip, it will be necessary toadjust the compass variance.2-41
