71GlossaryBitstreamThis is the compressed form of digital signals. A decoder decodesthese signals into 5.1 surround and multi-channel signals.Channel (when referring to DVD)Sound is divided into channels based on the sound’s role. For example, 5.1 channel≥Front speakers — 1 left channel and 1 right channel≥Center speaker — 1 channel≥Surround speakers — 1 left channel and 1 right channel≥Subwoofer — 1 channelk0.1 (the ratio of bass to the total amountof sound output)Examples as shown in the status display(1) 1: Subwoofer signal(not displayed if there is no subwoofersignal)(2) 0: No surround1: Mono surround2: Stereo surround (left/right)(3) 1: Center2: Front leftiFront right3: Front leftiFront rightiCenterDIRECT NAVIGATORThis is a list of programmes you have recorded. You can selectprogrammes from the list to view. The list also shows the date andtime of recording, the channel, and the titles of titled programmes. The selected programme is played in the background, makingselection even simpler.Dolby DigitalThis is a method of coding digital signals developed by DolbyLaboratories. Apart from stereo (2 channel) audio, these signalscan also be 5.1-channel audio. A large amount of audioinformation can be recorded on one disc using this method.Dolby Pro LogicA surround system where a 4-channel audio track is recorded as2 channels and then is restored to 4 channels for play. Thesurround channel is monaural.DPOF (Digital Print Order Format)DPOF is the standard printing format for still picture data. It is usedat a photo studio to print out the still picture data taken with a digitalcamera etc. or when you print out using a domestic printer.DTS Digital SurroundThis surround system is used in many movie theaters around theworld. The separation between channels is good and thecompression ratio is low, so realistic sound effects are possible.DTS soundtracks are produced with the assumption that allchannels will be used.FinalizeThis process allows DVD-R to be played on compatible equipment.Frame and fieldFrames are the still pictures that go together to make a movingpicture. A frame is made up of 2 fields.≥A frame still is made up of two alternating fields, so the picturemay appear blurred, but overall quality is high.≥A field still is not blurred, but it has only half the information of aframe still so picture quality is lower.JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)This is a system used for compressing/decoding colour stillpictures. If you select JPEG as the storage system on digital cameras etc.,the data will be compressed to 1/10– 1/100 of its original size. Thespecial quality of this standard is that there is little deterioration inpicture quality in comparison to the degree of compression.Linear PCMThis is a form of signal that has been digitized without compressingit. CDs are recorded with 44.1 kHz/16 bit PCM, while DVDs usePCM between 48 kHz/16 bit and 96 kHz/24 bit, allowingreproduction of greater quality sound. The linear PCM signals output from the DIGITAL AUDIO OUT,OPTICAL terminal are stereo (2 channel).LPCM sound is available when recording in XP mode.NICAM (NICAM Broadcasting System)This is a 2 channel sound broadcast system which in mostinstances provides high quality stereo sound. Broadcasters canalso transmit two separate mono soundtracks on this system.Pan&Scan/LetterboxIn general, DVD-Video are produced with the intention that they beviewed on a widescreen television with an aspect ratio of 16:9.This means you can view most material with the intended aspectratio on a widescreen television.Material with this ratio will not fit onto a standard television with anaspect ratio of 4:3. Two styles of picture, “Pan&Scan” and“Letterbox”, deal with this problem.Pan&Scan: The sides are cut off so thepicture fills the screen.Letterbox: Black bands appear at the topand bottom of the picture so thepicture itself appears in an aspectratio of 16:9.Playback control (PBC)This is a method of playing Video CDs. You can select parts toplay by using menus recorded on the disc.PLAY LISTThis is a collection of scenes. It enables you to play these scenesin succession or to select specific ones to play.Programme (PRG)The section between the point where recording is started and thepoint where it is stopped.RGB Output[RGB] means separate Red/Green/Blue colour signals (PAL only). If you connect a TV equipped with RGB input capability to the AV1socket on this unit, and a decoder equipped with RGB outputcapability to the AV2 socket, the TV can receive RGB signal inputfrom the decoder via the unit.Sampling frequencyThis is the number of samples of sound taken per second duringconversion to a digital signal. A high sampling frequency results ina sound close to the original when played back.S-video outputThe colour and luminance signals are separated before being sentto the television, making for greater picture clarity.TIFF (Tag Image File Format)A still picture data standard.A common format for storing high quality images on digitalcamera’s and other devices.3/2 .1 ch(2)(1)(3)= +Frame Field Field
