11 - Cascade—Using the cascade11–3NOTEThe buss master controls on a slave unit haveno effect on the levels of cascaded busses. However, the individual slave controls may beused to control the level of the STEREO OUT,the first four Aux sends and the PFL bussesfrom the slave units, but this will have noeffect on the overall summed level of the Auxsend or stereo buss, etc.See the diagram below for details of the busssumming and fader controls available forthese cascaded busses.11.1.2Word sync in a cascadeThe slave units all take their clock automaticallythrough the cascade connection from the master unit.Only one sampling frequency (that of the master) isavailable in a cascade—it is not possible to mix44.1 kHz and 48 kHz operations in one cascade. The master unit itself can take its clock from anysource (except cascade, of course), including its owninternal clock. Note that if there are digital recordersattached to more than one unit in the cascade, theseshould probably be set to take their clock from themaster TM-D4000 unit in the cascade.11.2Using the cascadeThe following explains the functions available in acascade of TM-D4000 units:11.2.1Level settingsThe controls on slave units which normally controlthe output buss levels have no effect on the overalllevel of the cascaded busses output from the masterunit.Even though an output buss is output in parallel fromthe master and a slave unit simultaneously, the slavebuss fader will have no effect on the level of the bussoutput from the slave.Likewise, although the level of the individual Auxsends, PFL and STEREO OUT which are outputfrom a slave unit can be set from the slave unit itself, the settings made on the slave unit will have no effecton the level output from the master. It is necessary touse the master buss fader to adjust these levels. In this way, the cascade function differs from a post-fader “sub out” that is sometimes found on analogconsoles.11.2.2Option settingsWhen the cascade is first set up, the master unit’soption settings (3.3, “Option setup”) are copied to allslave units. These settings may be changed later on any of theunits in the cascade, and the changes will be reflectedthroughout the cascade.11.2.3Automation settingsSettings made in the AUTOMATIONSETUP screen will be copied from the master unitto slave units when the cascade is first set up.These settings may be changed later on any of theunits in the cascade, and the changes will be reflectedthroughout the cascade.11.2.4MonitoringOnly the master unit’s MONITOR SELECT keys [22]have any effect.Pressing the MONITOR SELECT keys on any of theslave units will have no effect, as the C-R outputfrom a slave is not the summed buss.11.2.5Soloing (PFL)When the PFL solo mode is selected, pressing theSOLO key on any of the cascaded units will replaceMASTERSLAVE 1SLAVE 2SLAVE 3Buss is cascaded to masterMaster unit’s bussfaders control thebuss output lev-els from all unitsin cascadeOutput busses 1–8 in cascadeMASTERSLAVE 1SLAVE 2SLAVE 3Aux sends, etc are cascaded to masterMaster unit’s bussfaders control thesummed outputlevelsAux 1–4, Stereo out and PFL in cascadeIndividual units’ controls adjust thelevels from these units
