Rotate the idler gear back and forth to checkidler gear-to-crankshaft gear backlash. Totalindicator reading is backlash. Record themeasurement.Measuring Idler Gear-to-Camshaft GearBacklash1. Drive a small wooden wedge between thecrankshaft gear and idler gear to prevent theidler gear from rotating.2. Install a dial indicator to read camshaft gearbacklash. Rotate camshaft drive gear againstidler gear to measure backlash. Record themeasurement.3. Check the idler gear-to-fuel injection pumpdrive gear backlash in the same manner as thecamshaft drive gear. Record the measurement.Removal of Timing Gears1. Remove the bolts from the idler gear shaft(Figure 6-42, (1)). Remove the idler gear shaft,idler gear (Figure 6-42, (3)) and bushing(Figure 6-42, (2)).Figure 6-422. Do not remove the crankshaft gear unless it isdamaged and requires replacement. If the gearmust be removed, remove it with a gear puller.3. Removal of the camshaft gear requires thecamshaft be removed with a press. Do notremove the camshaft gear unless it or thecamshaft is damaged and requiresreplacement. See Removal of Camshaft onpage 6-39.NOTICEDo not loosen or remove the four bolts retainingthe fuel injection pump drive gear to the fuelinjection pump hub.
