GENERAL SERVICE INFORMATION4-6 TNV IDI Service ManualFunction of Major Engine ComponentsFUNCTION OF MAJOR ENGINE COMPONENTSComponent FunctionAir CleanerThe air cleaner prevents airborne contaminants from entering theengine. Since the air cleaner is application specific, it must becarefully selected by an application engineer. It is not part of thebasic engine package as shipped from the Yanmar factory. Periodicreplacement of the air cleaner filter element is necessary. See thePeriodic Maintenance Schedule on page 5-5 for the replacementfrequency.DynamoThe dynamo is driven by a V-belt which is powered by thecrankshaft V-pulley. The dynamo supplies electricity to the enginesystems and charges the battery while the engine is running.Dipstick (Engine Oil) The engine oil dipstick is used to determine the amount of engineoil in the crankcase.Electric Fuel PumpThe electric fuel pump makes sure there is a constant supply ofdiesel fuel to the fuel injection pump. The electric fuel pump iselectro-magnetic and runs on 12 VDC. An electric fuel pump maybe installed as standard equipment based on engine model andspecification. If an electric fuel pump is installed, turn the key switchto the ON position for 10 to 15 seconds to prime the fuel system.Engine Oil FilterThe engine oil filter removes contaminants and sediments from theengine oil. Periodic replacement of the engine oil filter is necessary.See the Periodic Maintenance Schedule on page 5-5 for thereplacement frequency.Fuel FilterThe fuel filter removes contaminants and sediments from the dieselfuel. Periodic replacement of the fuel filter is necessary. See thePeriodic Maintenance Schedule on page 5-5 for the replacementfrequency. Please note that the word “diesel” is impliedthroughout this manual when the word “fuel” is used.Fuel Filter / Water SeparatorThe fuel filter / water separator removes contaminants, sedimentsand water from diesel fuel going to the fuel filter. This is a requiredcomponent of the fuel system. This is standard equipment withevery engine. The separator is installed between the fuel tank andthe fuel pump. Periodically drain the water from the fuel filter / waterseparator using the drain cock at the bottom of the separator.Fuel Priming LeverIf the unit has a mechanical fuel pump, a fuel priming lever on themechanical fuel pump primes the fuel system. The fuel systemneeds to be primed before you start the engine for the first time, ifyou run out of fuel, or if fuel system service is performed. To primethe fuel system, operate the fuel priming lever until the cup in thefuel filter is full of fuel.
