ELECTRIC WIRINGTNV IDI Service Manual 12-3Electric Wiring PrecautionsELECTRIC WIRINGPRECAUTIONSFailure to follow these precautions may result in thefailure of an electrical component and the loss ofwarranty coverage on that item as well as relateditems. Make sure that all users read andunderstand these precautions.NOTICEDo not reverse the positive (+) and negative (-)ends of the battery cable. The alternator diode andstator coil will be damaged.NOTICEWhen the battery indicator goes out, it should notcome on again. The battery indicator only comeson during operation if the alternator fails. However,if an LED is used in the battery indicator, the LEDwill shine faintly during normal operation.NOTICEMake sure that the combined total resistance of thebattery cable in both directions between the startermotor and the battery is within the value indicatedin the Battery Cable Resistance chart in the ElectricWiring Section of this manual. The starter motor willmalfunction and fail if the resistance is higher thanthe specified value.NOTICERemoving the battery cables or the battery whilethe engine is operating may cause damage to thecurrent limiter depending on the electricalequipment being used. This situation could causeloss of control of output voltage. The continuoushigh voltage of 23-24 volts (for 5000 rpm dynamo)will damage the current limiter and other electricalequipment.NOTICEReversing the battery cable connections at thebattery or on the engine will destroy the SCR diodein the current limiter. This will cause the chargingsystem to malfunction and may cause damage tothe electrical harnesses.
