2019 Malibu Boats, LLC Owner’s Manual • Page 91All systems: If the battery has insufficient charge, use only abattery charger to recharge the battery, or remove the battery andtake it to an authorized Malibu dealer or auto parts store that hasthe appropriate facilities to safely recharge the battery. If the boat isout of the water and/or in storage, OFF is the setting for the batteryswitch.Malibu does not recommend the purchase and use of batterychargers other than the battery charger offered as an option throughyour authorized Malibu dealer. The battery charger offered by yourdealer has been selected as best for meeting the requirements of800 cca batteries. If a battery(ies) requires ajump start, do not allow thealternator to recharge it/them as it can lead to the alternator failing much morequickly than it would normally. Such damage would notbe covered under warranty. If the battery switch is in theOFF position, the automaticbilge system will continue tooperate to prevent potential swamping of the boat. Thiscould result in a drain on the battery after an extendedperiod of time. The only manner in which the automaticbilge system is OFF is to disconnect the battery cablesfrom the batteries or remove the batteries. Unless theboat has been removed from the water, Malibu does notrecommend disconnecting the automatic bilge system.Inside the battery is anelectrolyte fluid that allowsthe chemical reaction toprovide power. The fluidis comprised of several components, one of which issulfuric acid. As with most acids, this is caustic andcorrosive. If it comes in contact with skin, immediatelyflush the area with copious amounts of fresh, cleanwater. Follow up with medical assistance. If it becomes necessary tore-charge a battery from anexternal source, DO NOTattempt to charge using automotive battery cables or useanother boat battery as the source for charging. Someamounts of hydrogen gas are emitted during the chargingprocess. This can be very dangerous. It is critical tokeep all sparks, including lit cigarettes, lighters or anytype of flame, well away from a charging battery. Usethe optional battery charger sold by authorized Malibudealers, or a similar aftermarket battery charger. Usingthe wrong type of charging procedure or improperlycharging a battery can result in an explosion and/or firethat could lead to serious injury or death.Use marine-rated batteries only! Never use automotive bat-teries as they do not have the additional protection necessary tofunction in a boat where water and humidity are always factors.Failure to use marine-rated batteries in your boatcould result in electricalsystem interruptions that could strand your boat duringan outing. Batteries are placed in molded containersunder the observer seat or in the bow (depending onthe model) to provide extra protection, but it is stillpossible for water and the high-humidity associated withoperation on the water to affect batteries. If a battery, even marine-rated, becomes wet, allow it to dry beforetrying to start the engine. Water can cause a short atthe battery terminals, which would prevent operation.Note that batteries are never covered under Malibuwarranty. Damage to other components due to the useof inappropriate batteries or failure to properly maintainbatteries is also not covered under warranty.Batteries used in tandemmust always use the samechemistry! Mixing batterytypes can cause damage to the electrical system, which isnot covered under warranty.Connecting/Disconnecting BatteriesDO NOT remove batterycables from the batteryterminals while the engineis running! This will likelycause catastrophic damage to the alternator. Such damageis not covered under warranty! The posts on a battery are marked negative (-) and positive (+),one of each on top and separate by some space. The battery cablesare color-coded, black for negative and red for positive.Malibu recommends having your authorized Malibu dealer installthe batteries. Consumers can perform this procedure, providedcommon sense safety guides the process. If batteries have not been previously installed:https://www.boat-manuals.com/
