With the standard, manual system, there is a junction that doesrequire occasional lubrication with marine-grade grease. This junctionis accessed from the starboard side engine close-out in Wakesetters. In the Response and TXi, only the manual steering is offered.(Never ignore any steering issues, regardless of timing for theannual maintenance check-up.)Shift and Throttle SystemAs with the steering, never ignore suspicious issues with theshifter/throttle. Anytime the lever does not move smoothly or the boatdoes not shift/accelerate/decelerate with ease and smoothness, it isa matter to be resolved by an authorized Malibu dealer. Do not waitfor the annual maintenance period to verify safe operations.BatteryYour authorized Malibu dealer can check to see that thebattery(ies) appear to be holding charge properly. Unless a battery hasfully expended its life cycle, it’s impossible to guarantee that the batterywill continue to serve, but experience helps the dealer to anticipatewhether there is still service to be expected from the battery. When it is necessary to replace a battery, be certain to select amarine-grade battery with at least eight hundred (800) cold crankingamps (cca) at zero degrees (0o) Fahrenheit. Spiral cell batteries aresuperior in holding charges and extending the period of availableusage.Considerably more information about batteries is available in theDashes and Video Screen section of this Owner’s Manual.Refer to your battery supplier for advice regarding long-term storage and/or winterization. If your battery manufacturerrecommends removing the battery(ies) from the boat, verify whetherthe manufacturer requires that the battery(ies) is/are fully charged.Follow common sensesafety instructions regardingthe removal or installationof batteries. Due topotentially explosive fumes and corrosive battery acid, failure to wear protective items and follow instructionscorrectly could result in serious injury or even death.• Because of corrosive and explosive qualities in battery acid andfumes, put on safety glasses and mechanic-type safety gloves.• Determine the size socket required to disconnect the batterycables and bracket nuts. Extensions may be required.• ALWAYS DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE (-) CABLE FIRST.• Ensure that the negative cable will not come in contact with thepositive cable during the rest of the procedure.• Disconnect the positive (+) cable, TAKING CARE TO AVOID ANYCONTACT BETWEEN THE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE ANDANY METAL. There may be residual charge still in the electricalsystem, which could result in a serious electrical shock or burns.• With the battery cables disconnected and out of the way, removethe bracket nuts holding the battery in place.• Batteries should always be stored in a cool, dry location.Manufacturers generally prefer batteries be stored on shelvingabove floor level.• Using an old toothbrush or similar bristled brush, and a mixof baking soda and water, clean off the battery terminals andcable ends, if they show any signs of corrosion. A small amount, especially as batteries age, is not uncommon, but excessivecorrosion could be sign of future service interruptions, and itshould be brought to the attention of your authorized Malibudealer. Allow the terminals and cable ends to air dry.• Clean the battery lugs with a wire brush.Following the storage period, reverse the above steps to reinstallthe battery(ies).PumpsThe authorized Malibu dealer can inspect and repair/replace ballastand bilge pumps that are not functioning properly. This is both a safetymatter and adds to the life of the boat’s systems. All pumps will losefunctionality over time as the internal components are designed tobe self-sacrificing during use, rather than allowing debris to foul anddamage more expensive and complex components of these systems.Insist upon pump evaluations during annual maintenance.Coolant SystemThere are two (2) elements to the coolant system in Malibu boats:the closed-cooling system and the raw water intake system. Bothrequire attention on a regular basis. Depending on the body of water, attention may need to be frequent.Any time the enginetemperature raises abovenormal operating levels(approximately 155-175 degrees) operators mustdetermine the source of the overheating and address theissue. Often, it may be caused by debris in the sea strainer(raw water intake). If cleaning the sea strainer does notresult in lower operating engine temperature, have theboat towed to shore and take it to an authorized Malibudealer for analysis. Failure to immediately addressoverheating issues can void the warranty.2019 Malibu Boats, LLC Owner’s Manual • Page 186https://www.boat-manuals.com/
