90 ITG engineering guidelinesIP Trunk 3.01 (and later) is targeted towards the Enterprise customer whohas a Meridian 1/CS 1000M system installed for providing corporate voiceservices and an intranet for corporate data services. A customer is expectedto use the IP Trunk 3.01 system to move traffic from a PSTN-based networkto the intranet. Voice and fax services which depended on circuit-switchedand Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) technology are transported usingpacket-switched and statistical multiplexing technology. This chapter provides guidelines for designing a network of IP Trunk 3.01(and later) nodes over the corporate intranet. It describes how to qualify thecorporate intranet to support an IP Trunk 3.01 (and later) network and howto determine changes required to maintain the quality of voice serviceswhen moving those services from the PSTN. It addresses requirements forthe successful integration with the customer’s existing LAN. By followingthese guidelines, the IP Trunk 3.01 (and later) network can be designedso that the cost and quality tradeoff is at best imperceptible and at worstwithin a calculated tolerance.Pre-installation analysis of the data network enables IP Trunk 3.0 (and later)to be provisioned correctly. For proper analysis and deployment, obtain anetwork diagram or a description of the network topology and hierarchy.Nortel recommends using a data network analyzer (for example, Sniffer TM)for evaluation and troubleshooting.AudienceThis chapter is intended for telecom and datacom engineers who design andinstall the IP Trunk 3.01 (and later) node portion of the VoIP network. It isassumed that the telecom engineer is familiar with engineering the Meridian1/CS 1000 system and obtaining system voice and fax traffic statistics. It isassumed that the datacom engineer is familiar with the intranet architecture,LAN installations, tools for collecting and analyzing data network statistics, and data network management systems. For information on designing a Meridian 1/ CS 1000 network, refer to thefollowing NTP:• Meridian 1 Small System Planning and Engineering (NN43011-220)• Communication Server 1000M and Meridian 1 Large System Planningand Engineering (NN43021-220)• Communication Server 1000E Planning and Engineering (NN43041-220)Equipment requirementsThe IP Trunk 3.01 (and later) system was designed for operation on awell-provisioned, stable LAN.
