STARTING AND OPERATING 223NOTE:You must press and hold the brake pedal whileshifting out of PARK.Ignition Park InterlockThis vehicle is equipped with an Ignition ParkInterlock which requires the transmission to bein PARK before the ignition can be turned to theOFF mode. This helps the driver avoidinadvertently leaving the vehicle without placingthe transmission in PARK. This system alsolocks the transmission in PARK whenever theignition is in the OFF mode.NOTE:The transmission is NOT locked in PARK whenthe ignition is in the ACC mode (even though theengine will be off). Ensure that the transmissionis in PARK, and the ignition is OFF (not in ACCmode) before exiting the vehicle.Brake/Transmission Shift Interlock SystemThis vehicle is equipped with a BrakeTransmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) system thatholds the transmission gear selector in PARKunless the brakes are applied. To shift thetransmission out of PARK, the engine must berunning and the brake pedal must be pressed.The brake pedal must also be pressed to shiftfrom NEUTRAL into DRIVE or REVERSE when thevehicle is stopped or moving at low speeds.Eight-Speed Automatic TransmissionThe transmission is controlled using a rotaryelectronic gear selector located on theinstrument panel. The transmission gear range(PRND) is displayed both above the gearselector and in the instrument cluster. To selecta gear range, simply rotate the gear selector.You must press the brake pedal to shift thetransmission out of PARK (or NEUTRAL, whenthe vehicle is stopped or moving at low speeds).To shift past multiple gear ranges at once (suchas PARK to DRIVE), simply rotate the gearselector to the appropriate detent. Select theDRIVE range for normal driving.NOTE:In the event of a mismatch between the gearselector position and the actual transmissiongear (for example, driver selects PARK whiledriving), the position indicator will blink continu-ously until the selector is returned to the properposition, or the requested shift can becompleted. Do not leave the key fob in or near thevehicle (or in a location accessible to chil-dren), and do not leave the ignition in theACC or ON/RUN mode. A child couldoperate power windows, other controls, ormove the vehicle.CAUTION! Shift into or out of PARK or REVERSE onlyafter the vehicle has come to a completestop. Do not shift between PARK, REVERSE,NEUTRAL, or DRIVE when the engine isabove idle speed. Before shifting into any gear, make sureyour foot is firmly pressing the brake pedal.WARNING! (Continued)5
