TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS 417Diesel fuel is seldom completely free of water. To prevent fuel system trouble, drain theaccumulated water from the fuel/waterseparator filter using the fuel/water separatordrain provided on the fuel filter housing. If youbuy good quality fuel and follow the coldweather advice above, fuel conditioners shouldnot be required in your vehicle. If available inyour area, a high cetane “premium” diesel fuelmay offer improved cold-starting and warm-upperformance.Diesel Fuel SpecificationsThis diesel engine has been developed to takeadvantage of the high energy content andgenerally lower cost No. 2 Ultra Low Sulfurdiesel fuel or No. 2 Ultra Low Sulfur climatizeddiesel fuels.NOTE: If you accidentally fill the fuel tank with gaso-line on your diesel vehicle, do not start theengine. Damage to the engine and fuelsystem could occur. Please call an autho-rized dealer for service. A maximum blend of 5% biodiesel meetingASTM specification D-975 may be used withyour diesel engine without any adjustmentsto regular service schedules. Commercially available fuel additives are notnecessary for the proper operation of yourdiesel engine. No. 1 Ultra Low Sulfur diesel fuel should onlybe used where extended arctic conditions(-10°F or -23°C) exist.Biodiesel Fuel RequirementsA maximum blend of 5% biodiesel meetingASTM specification D975 is recommended foruse with your diesel engine. If frequentoperation with Biodiesel blends that arebetween 6% and 7% (B6–B7) is desired, themaintenance schedule is subject to shorterintervals. The oil and filter change along with fuel filterreplacement is subject to shorter intervals whenoperating your engine on biodiesel greater than 5%.Do not use biodiesel greater than 7%.For regular use of biodiesel blends between 6%and 7% (B6–B7) it is important that youunderstand and comply with theserequirements. Refer to the “Maintenance Plan”in “Scheduled Servicing” for further direction.Biodiesel is a fuel produced from renewableresources typically derived from animal fat, rapeseed oil (Rapeseed Methyl Ester (RME)base), or soybean oil (Soy Methyl Ester (SME orSOME) base).Biodiesel fuel has inherent limitations whichrequire that you understand and adhere to thefollowing requirements if you use blends ofBiodiesel between 6% and 7% (B6–B7). Thereare no unique restrictions for the use of B5.CAUTION!If the “Water in Fuel Indicator Light” remainson, DO NOT START engine before you drainthe water from the fuel filter(s) to avoidengine damage. Refer to “Draining Fuel/Water Separator Filter” in “Servicing AndMaintenance” for further information.CAUTION!Failure to comply with Oil Change requirementsfor vehicles operating on biodiesel blendsbetween 6% and 7% (B6–B7) will result in prema-ture engine wear. Such wear is not covered by theNew Vehicle Limited Warranty.8
