SERVICING AND MAINTENANCE 373Upon proper draining of the water from the fuelfilter, the “Water In Fuel Indicator Light” willremain illuminated for approximately10 seconds.NOTE:Care should be taken in disposing of used fluidsfrom your vehicle. Used fluids, indiscriminatelydiscarded, can present a problem to the envi-ronment. Contact an authorized dealer, servicestation, or government agency for advice onrecycling programs and for where used fluidsand filters can be properly disposed of in yourarea.Drain the fuel/water separator filter when the“Water In Fuel Indicator Light” is ON. Within10 minutes of vehicle shutdown, turn the filterdrain valve (located on the bottom of the filterhousing) counterclockwise to drain fuel/water,then turn the ignition switch to the ON position,and allow any accumulated water to drain.Leave the drain valve open until all water andcontaminants have been removed. When cleanfuel is visible, close the drain valve by turning itclockwise, and turn the ignition switch to OFF.If more than two ounces or 60 milliliters of fuelhave been drained, refer to “Priming If TheEngine Has Run Out Of Fuel” in this chapter.Underbody Mounted Fuel FilterReplacement — Diesel EngineNOTE:Using a fuel filter that does not meet the manu-facturer's filtration and water separatingrequirements can severely impact fuel systemlife and reliability.Fuel Filter Assembly1. Turn engine off.2. Place a drain pan under the fuel filterassembly.3. Open the water drain valve, and let anyaccumulated water drain.4. Close the water drain valve.5. Remove bottom cover using a strap wrench.Rotate counterclockwise for removal.Remove the used o-ring and discard it.CAUTION! Diesel fuel will damage blacktop pavingsurfaces. Drain the filter into an appro-priate container. Do not prefill the fuel filter when installing anew fuel filter. There is a possibility debriscould be introduced into the fuel filterduring this action.
