3 – Connections : Digital connections40 TASCAM DM-3200 User’s ManualAnalog outputsThe dedicated analog outputs are relatively few sinceit is expected that most signals will remain in the dig-ital domain after they have entered the DM-3200.STEREO OUT Balanced XLR connections (1ground, 2 hot, 3 cold), which output the stereo busssignals, which can be used to feed the analog inputsof a 2-track recorder, or a specialist chain of analogdevices used for mastering.NOTEThere are no dedicated stereo digital outputs. The ste-reo buss may be routed internally to a variety of digitaloutputs in different formats. See “Output routing” onpage 49 for details.ASSIGNABLE SENDS These are balanced 1/4"TRS jacks at –2 dBu (wired as described above). Asthe name suggests, they provide analog send outputswhich can be assigned from a variety of sources (see“Routing” on page 47).Monitoring (CR OUTPUTS) A pair of balanced1/4" jacks provides the feed to the stereo controlroom monitoring system (amp/speaker or poweredmonitors) at +4 dBu levels. The level is adjustedusing the hardware CR control.Monitoring (STUDIO OUTPUTS) Theseunbalanced RCA jacks provide a –10 dBV feed to thestudio monitoring system. The level is controlled bysoftware.Digital connectionsDigital audio I/OTDIF I/O There are three 25-pin TDIF-1 connectorseach carrying eight channels of input and eight ofoutput. These can be used to connect DTRS record-ers, etc. as well as other devices whose digital I/Oconforms to the TDIF-1 standard.WARNINGMake connections to these terminals only usingapproved TDIF cables. Use of any other cables will resultin signal degradation, and may even damage equip-ment.ADAT “lightpipe” OUT & IN These TOSLINKoptical connectors carry eight output channels andeight input channels of audio respectively.Connect them to appropriately-equipped equipmentusing standard optical digital audio cables.CASCADE This is a special connector, used only toconnect another DM-3200 unit to extend the capabil-ities of the DM-3200. This facility is not available inthe first release of the software.WARNINGOnly use the special TASCAM cascade cable here. Use ofany other type of cable may result in damage to theequipment.Digital inputs and outputs There are two setsof stereo digital inputs and two sets of stereo digitaloutputs. Each set comprises an unbalanced RCA connector(typically for use with S/PDIF equipment), and anXLR connector (typically for use with AES/EBUequipment).Though connections can be made to both the RCAand XLR connectors together, only one can be usedfor input at any one time (output from these jacks ismade in parallel). Selection is made in software. We strongly recommend that to maintain signal qual-ity, you only use cables designed for digital equip-ment.
