The benefits of managing the Web sitesthat can and cannot be accessed include: Increased productivity. Decreased legal liability. Improved network performance.The list of sites used to allow or deny access can be automatically loadedusing the 3Com SuperStack Web Site Filter and entered by hand usingthe Allow and Deny lists of the Webcache. Alternatively control forfiltering Web sites can be passed to an external server which incorporatesa Websense Enterprise filter.The Webcache can also log those users attempting to access the sitesthat you have restricted either as an alternative to blocking or in additionto blocking the users from restricted sites. See “Filter Logging” onpage 159.UnderstandingContent FilteringModesThere are three types of filtering modes available: 3Com Web SiteFiltering, Websense Enterprise filtering, and Manual Content Filtering. 3Com Web Site Filtering is a subscription-based service thatdownloads a list of millions of categorized Web sites to yourWebcache from a 3Com server on the Internet. This list allows theWebcache to block some or all of millions of Web sites by selectingfrom twenty categories.The 3Com Web Site Filtering service offers improved businessproductivity, reduced legal and privacy risks with little configurationand minimal administrative overhead. The key advantage of the 3ComWeb Site Filtering service is that it is performed on the Webcacheitself, without the need to administer an external server with thirdparty software, sourced from different suppliers. The filter is activatedby registering a license key at http://www.3com.com/register toenable the service, then simply defining what content categories aredeemed unacceptable.With 3Com Web Site Filtering enabled, you can create filter policiesthat are checked before deciding whether to allow or deny a webrequest.
