The SMTP server will attempt toauthenticate email in the following way: If the SMTP server reports that it cannot perform authentication, theemail will fail. An entry is made in the Webcache’s System Log torecord the failure. If the SMTP server can perform authentication, the Webcache willautomatically use the strongest form of authentication supported byboth the Webcache and SMTP server. It attempts to use CRAM-MD5and Plain authentication in that order. CRAM-MD5 authenticationprevents the username and password from being sent as clear text.Plain authentication sends the username and password as clear text. The SMTP server must support CRAM-MD5 authentication for theWebcache to use that method. CRAM-MD5 is an option in Unix SMTPservers such as Sendmail. You must configure Sendmail to use a typeof SMTP authentication.
