WAN Configuration2-40Local Management User’s GuideExample 1:There is a nailed-up PPP interface #3, and to back it up, ISDN interface #4 is used with the defaultvalues. Use the command:setbackup 3 4Example 2:For any switched medium like ISDN there are two types of interfaces, primary and secondary(backup). Primary interfaces automatically attempt to connect using DoD. Because of this, it isrecommended not to create any unnecessary interfaces because they will consume unnecessarytime in trying to connect. However, if additional interfaces have been created for which their needis unknown, then DoD should be disabled. To do this, set the backup interface to itself. Do this foreach interface that should have DoD disabled. This recommendation also applies to Dial-in onlyinterfaces (i.e., answer mode interfaces). Use the command:setbackup 3 to 3Answer mode only is set, a “dormant” state. This will set the backup interface to itself if the ISDNinterface is to be used only as a dial-in circuit (i.e., answer mode only).Set Idle TimeoutsSet the receive and transmit idle timeouts for backup interfaces using Network Tools. Thiscommand automatically disconnects an idle switched interface when either one of the parametersTRANSMITIDLETIMEOUT or RECEIVEIDLETIMEOUT is met for the interface:setidletimeout [IFACENUM] [TRANSMITIDLETIMEOUT] [RECEIVEIDLETIMEOUT]IFACENUM — The number of the interface to be configured.TRANSMITIDLETIMEOUT — The idle time out parameter for the transmit time out.RECEIVEIDLETIMEOUT — The idle time out parameter for the receive time out.Example: To set the receive time out to 180 seconds and the transmit side to 600 seconds forISDN interface #4, use this command:setidletimeout 4 180 600NOTEIf the interface is active, you cannot configure backup. De-activate the interfacebefore proceeding.
