v Avoid dropping any metallic objects, such as paper clips, hairpins, and screws, into the server.Handling static-sensitive devicesThis topic provides instructions for how to handle static-sensitive devices.Attention: Static electricity can damage the server and other electronic devices. Toavoid damage, keep static-sensitive devices in their static-protective packages untilyou are ready to install them.To reduce the possibility of damage from electrostatic discharge, observe thefollowing precautions:v Limit your movement. Movement can cause static electricity to build up aroundyou.v Wear an electrostatic-discharge wrist strap, if one is available.v Handle the device carefully, holding it by its edges or its frame.v Do not touch solder joints, pins, or exposed circuitry.v Do not leave the device where others can handle and damage it.v While the device is still in its static-protective package, touch it to an unpaintedmetal surface on the outside of the server for at least 2 seconds. This drainsstatic electricity from the package and from your body.v Remove the device from its package and install it directly into the serverwithout setting down the device. If it is necessary to set down the device, put itback into its static-protective package. Do not place the device on the servercover or on a metal surface.v Take additional care when you handle devices during cold weather. Heatingreduces indoor humidity and increases static electricity.Servicing multi-node systemsThis topic provides general information about servicing multi-node systems.Note: Before you pull the servers out of the rack, make sure that the rack tip plateis installed. If you are servicing a QPI two-node scaled configuration, you can slide both unitsout of the rack at the same time to access components in the top node. To accessthe components in the bottom node, you must disconnect the QPI cables in therear of the server and unlatch the two-node bracket from the top node in the rear.If you are servicing components in a server to which a memory expansion moduleis attached, slide the server and memory expansion module out of the racktogether, as one unit.100 IBM System x3850 X5 and x3950 X5 Types 7145, 7146, 7143, and 7191: Problem Determination and Service Guide
