The following table describes the methods that you can use to view the event logs, depending on the condition of the server. The first two conditions generally do notrequire that you restart the server.Table 11. Methods for viewing event logsCondition ActionThe server is not hung and is connected to anetwork. Use any of the following methods:v Run DSA Portable to view the event logsor create an output file that you can sendto IBM service.v In a web browser, type the IP address ofthe IMM and go to the Event Log page.v Use IPMItool to view the system-eventlog.The server is not hung and is not connectedto a network.Use IPMItool locally to view thesystem-event log.The server is hung. v Restart the server and press F2 to startDSA Preboot and view the event logs.v Alternatively, you can restart the serverand press F1 to start the Setup utility andview the POST event log or system-eventlog. For more information, see “Viewingevent logs through the Setup utility” onpage 39.Checkout proceduresThis topic provides details about the checkout procedure used to diagnoseproblems with the server. The checkout procedure is the sequence of tasks that you should follow todiagnose a problem in the server.About the checkout procedureThis topic provides important safety and general information to review before youperform the checkout procedure. Before you perform the checkout procedure for diagnosing hardware problems, review the following information:v Read the safety information that begins with “Safety” on page v.v IBM Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) provides the primary method of testingthe major components of the server, such as the microprocessor board, Ethernetcontroller, DIMMs, memory controller, optical drives, and hard disk drives. Youcan also use them to test some external devices. If you are not sure whether aproblem is caused by the hardware or by the software, you can use DSA toconfirm that the hardware is working correctly.v When you run DSA, a single problem might cause more than one error message. When this happens, correct the cause of the first error message. The other errormessages usually will not occur the next time you run DSA.Exception: If multiple error codes or light path diagnostics LEDs indicate amicroprocessor error, the error might be in a microprocessor or in a40 IBM System x3850 X5 and x3950 X5 Types 7145, 7146, 7143, and 7191: Problem Determination and Service Guide
