356 CHAPTER 8: T HE E VENT LOGIf you have disabled Smart Event Analysis on a global basis then theper-event Smart Event Analysis settings are ignored. See “ControllingSmart Event Analysis”on page 352.Setting Thresholdsfor Monitor-BasedEventsA monitor-based event is generated when the state of a monitor exceedsa configured threshold and, if event suppression is enabled, continuouslyexceeds the threshold for a predetermined time or number of polls.See “Event Suppression” on page 325 for more information on eventsuppression and “Controlling Smart Event Analysis”on page 352 fordetails on how to enable and disable it.By changing the threshold for a monitor you can control the generationof events for that monitor. Lowering the threshold indicates that amonitor should be particularly sensitive to high values, and so events willbe generated more frequently. Increasing the threshold indicates thathigh values are normal for that monitor or that the monitor should be lesssensitive to high values, and so events will be generated less frequently.High and Warning ThresholdsMulti-state monitors have two thresholds: a high threshold and awarning threshold. If a monitor exceeds its high threshold for longenough then a high severity event will be generated. Similarly, if amonitor exceeds its warning threshold for long enough, but does nottrigger a high severity event, then a warning severity event will begenerated.3Com Network Director allows you to configure the high threshold formulti-state monitors and then automatically determines a suitable settingfor the warning threshold, based upon the configured high threshold andthe type of monitor. The warning threshold cannot be manuallyconfigured. See “Threshold Settings Dialog Box” on page 357.As bi-state monitors only have a good and a bad state, they do not havea warning threshold, only a high threshold. The high threshold is fixed forbi-state monitors: if a bi-state monitor enters its bad state then it hascrossed the high threshold.Launching the Threshold Settings Dialog BoxThe Threshold Settings dialog box can be launched for a monitor in thefollowing ways:
