808 CHAPTER 19: B ACKING UP DEVICE CONFIGURATIONSTo locate a backup file you will need to know:■ The IP address of the source device at the time the backup was made.■ The date and time of the Device Backup operation that created thebackup fileAll backup files have the file extension .xmlWhen deleting unwanted backup files you should take care to also deleteany auxiliary files referenced by the backup in order to conserve hard diskspace. Auxiliary files to a backup have the same filename as the backupfile but a different extension (e.g. bak, unit1, module*)Key Considerations The following section provides assistance when using Backup, Restoreand Setup. How Backup Files areDiscardedBefore the Device Backup operation saves a backup for a device, itperforms a consistency check. The consistency check looks for anyexisting backups that conflict either with the physical identification or thephysical configuration of the current device. Any existing backups thatfail this consistency check will be discarded before a new backup is saved. This happens if:■ There are existing backups associated with the physical identificationof the current device but the physical configuration stored in theexisting backups does not match the physical configuration of thecurrent device.■ There are no existing backups associated with the physicalidentification of the current device but there are existing backupsassociated with two or more other physical identifications thatpartially match the physical identification of the current device. Thiscan happen if you combine units from two or more existing devices toform a new device.Backup files that are discarded are not deleted from your hard disk butare moved to the following directory: LOCATION>\backups\lostThe default install location of 3Com Network Director is:C:\Program Files\3Com\3Com Network Director
