Simultaneous Bridging and Routing 6-5Simultaneous Bridgingand RoutingYou can configure the OfficeConnect Gateway for simultaneous bridging androuting. IP routing is configured if IP forwarding is enabled (see Enabling IPRouting).Bridging is enabled by adding a bridge network over the Ethernet and WANinterfaces (see Configure Bridging for the LAN and WAN). Routing and bridgingare enabled for each destination in its remote site profile. When configured for simultaneous bridging and routing, packets received are firstpassed through the router for any configured protocols. If the packet can not berouted, it is passed to the bridge, depending on the setting of the Bridge Firewallfunction. You can set the Bridge Firewall function of the OfficeConnect Gateway to any oneof three modes: Discard Routed Protocols Forward Unicast Packets Only Forward Broadcast/Unicast PacketsDiscard Routed Protocols The Discard Routed Protocols mode is the default mode. If a protocol is configuredfor routing and a packet for that protocol type is received from the LAN that is notaddressed to the MAC address of the OfficeConnect Gateway, it is discarded.Additionally, broadcasts for the protocol are not passed to the bridge.set bridge firewalldiscard_routed_protocolsUse the set bridge firewall discard_routed_protocols command to configurethe Bridge Firewall to discard routed protocols.Forward Unicast PacketsOnlyIf a protocol is configured for routing, and a packet for that protocol type isreceived from the LAN that is not addressed to the MAC address of theOfficeConnect Gateway, it is bridged. Other broadcasts for the configuredprotocol are not bridged.set bridge firewallfwd_unicast_onlyUse the set bridge firewall fwd_unicast_only command to configure theBridge Firewall to only forward unicast packets.ForwardBroadcast/UnicastPacketsUnicast packets for a configured protocol received from the LAN that are notaddressed to the MAC address of the OfficeConnect Gateway are bridged.Received broadcasts (such as DHCP) are bridged.set bridge firewallfwd_bc_and_unicastUse the set bridge firewall fwd_bc_and_unicast command to configure theBridge Firewall to forward both broadcast and unicast packets.Packets received from the WAN do not pass through the Bridge Firewall. Instead, they are delivered to the router or bridging function based on their encapsulation
