VEHICLE CARE 323{ WarningNeither tire underinflation noroverinflation is good.Underinflated tires, or tires thatdo not have enough air, canresult in:. Tire overloading andoverheating which couldlead to a blowout.. Premature orirregular wear.. Poor handling.. Reduced fuel economy.Overinflated tires, or tires thathave too much air, can result in:. Unusual wear.. Poor handling.. Rough ride.. Needless damage fromroad hazards. The Tire and Loading Informationlabel on the vehicle indicates theoriginal equipment tires and thecorrect cold tire inflationpressures. The recommendedpressure is the minimum airpressure needed to support thevehicle's maximum load carryingcapacity. See Vehicle Load Limits0 179.How the vehicle is loaded affectsvehicle handling and ride comfort.Never load the vehicle with moreweight than it was designed tocarry. When to CheckCheck the pressure of the tiresonce a month or more. Do notforget the compact spare, if thevehicle has one. The cold compactspare tire pressure should be at420 kPa (60 psi). See CompactSpare Tire 0 342.How to CheckUse a good quality pocket-typegauge to check tire pressure.Proper tire inflation cannot bedetermined by looking at the tire.Check the tire inflation pressurewhen the tires are cold, meaningthe vehicle has not been driven forat least three hours or no morethan 1.6 km (1 mi).Remove the valve cap from thetire valve stem. Press the tiregauge firmly onto the valve to geta pressure measurement. If thecold tire inflation pressurematches the recommendedpressure on the Tire and LoadingInformation label, no furtheradjustment is necessary. If theinflation pressure is low, add airuntil the recommended pressure isreached. If the inflation pressureis high, press on the metal stem inthe center of the tire valve torelease air.
