Removing a Hot-Pluggable PCI AdapterAttention: The Linux operating system does not support these hot-pluggable procedures. Also, Linuxdoes not support hot-swaping any hot-pluggable PCI adapters. A system with Linux installed must be shutdown and powered off before installing any PCI adapter. Use the non-hot-pluggable adapter procedureswhen removing a PCI adapter with the Linux operating system installed.Note: Removing a hot-pluggable PCI adapter requires the system administrator to take the PCI adapteroffline before performing any PCI adapter hot-swap procedures. Before taking an adapter offline,the devices attached to the adapter must also be taken offline. This action prevents a servicerepresentative or user from causing an unexpected outage for system users.To remove a hot-pluggable PCI adapter, do the following:1. On a Model 6C3, open the rear rack door.2. Disconnect any cables connected to the PCI adapter at the rear of the system.3. Place the system into the service position as described in “Placing the Model 6C3 into the ServicePosition” on page 284 or “Placing the Model 6E3 into the Service and Operating Position” on page286.4. Remove the service access cover as described in “Removing the Model 6C3 Service Access Cover”on page 288 or “Removing the Model 6E3 Service Access Cover” on page 289.5. Determine which adapters you want to remove.6. Record the slot number and location of each adapter being removed.Note: Adapter slots are numbered on the rear of the system.7. Ensure that any processes or applications that might use the adapter are stopped.8. Refer to “Accessing the PCI Hot-Swap Manager” on page 307, and follow those steps to select PCIHot Swap Manager. Then return here to continue.9. Select Unconfigure a Device and press Enter.10. Press F4 to display the Device Names menu.11. Select the adapter you are removing.12. Use the Tab key to answer NO to Keep Definition and YES to Unconfigure Child Devices. PressEnter.13. The ARE YOU SURE screen displays. Press Enter to verify the information. Successfulunconfiguration is indicated by the OK message displayed next to the Command field at the top of thescreen.14. Press F3 to return to the PCI Hot-Swap Manager menu.15. Select List PCI Hot-Swap Slots.16. Move the cursor to select the adapter that you are removing and press Enter. (The description entrydisplays as unknown).17. Press the Tab key until the entry field displays the remove operation and then press Enter. Follow theinstructions that display on the screen until you are instructed to remove the adapter.18. When you are instructed to remove the adapter from the adapter slot, disconnect any cables that areconnected to the adapter being removed.19. Before handling any card, board, or memory DIMM, refer to “Handling Static-Sensitive Devices” onpage 280.20. If you are removing a short adapter, continue to the next step.If you are removing a long adapter, do the following:a. Unlatch and open the PCI adapter light-pipe plate attached to the fan tray.b.
