Voltage Regulator ModulesThe following procedures describe the removal and replacement of the voltage regulator modules. Beforeperforming the following procedures, read the “Safety Notices” on page xi.The system backplane for the Model 6C3 and Model 6E3 contains three voltage regulator modules: a 1.2VVRM, a 2.5V VRM, and a 1.8V VRM. See the following figure for the location of each module.1 2 34J0AV1V3 V2 J3BJ1AJ2BJ2AJ0B J1BJ3A1 System Backplane 3 2.5V Voltage Regulator Module2 1.8V Voltage Regulator Module 4 1.2V Voltage Regulator ModuleRemoving Voltage Regulator ModulesTo remove a voltage regulator module, do the following:1. Shut down the system as described in “Stopping the System” on page 282.2. Disconnect the power source from the system.Note: This system may be equipped with a second power supply. Before continuing with thisprocedure, ensure that the power source to the system has been completely disconnected.3. If you are removing the 1.8V or 2.5V module, disconnect the power cables from the primary powersupply and secondary power supply if present.4. Place the system into the service position as described in “Placing the Model 6C3 into the ServicePosition” on page 284 or “Placing the Model 6E3 into the Service and Operating Position” on page286.5. Remove the service access cover as described in “Removing the Model 6C3 Service Access Cover”on page 288 or “Removing the Model 6E3 Service Access Cover” on page 289.6. Before handling any card, board, or memory DIMM, be sure to use your electrostatic discharge strapto minimize static-electric discharge. Refer to “Handling Static-Sensitive Devices” on page 280.7. To access the voltage regulator module, do one of the following:a. If you are removing the 1.8V or 2.5V module, remove the primary power supply and secondarypower supply or power supply filler as described in “Removing a Power Supply with the SystemPower Off” on page 348.b. If you are removing the 1.2V module, remove the fan tray assembly as described in “Removingthe Fan Tray Assembly” on page 321.Chapter 9. Removal and Replacement Procedures 357
