Memory DIMMsThe following procedures describe the removal, replacement, and installation of memory DIMMs. Beforeperforming the following procedures, read the “Safety Notices” on page xi.Removing Memory DIMMsTo remove the memory DIMMs, do the following:1. Using the procedures in Chapter 12, “Component and Attention LEDs,” on page 389, locate thememory DIMMs, and determine which DIMM you want to remove.Attention: To prevent damage to the memory DIMM and the memory DIMM connectors, open orclose the retention latches at the same time.2. Stop the system as described in “Stopping the System” on page 282.3. Disconnect the power source from the system.Note: This system may be equipped with a second power supply. Before continuing with thisprocedure, ensure that the power source to the system has been completely disconnected.4. If necessary to access DIMM positions on the system backplane, disconnect the cables from thepower supplies or service processor assembly at the rear of the system.5. Place the system into the service position as described in “Placing the Model 6C3 into the ServicePosition” on page 284 or “Placing the Model 6E3 into the Service and Operating Position” on page286.6. Remove the service access cover as described in “Removing the Model 6C3 Service Access Cover”on page 288 or “Removing the Model 6E3 Service Access Cover” on page 289.7. Remove the fan tray assembly as described in “Removing the Fan Tray Assembly” on page 321.8. If necessary to access DIMM positions on the system backplane, remove the power supply andpower supply filler (or both power supplies if a secondary supply is installed), as described in“Removing a Power Supply with the System Power Off” on page 348.9. If necessary to access DIMMs on the system backplane, remove the service processor assembly asdescribed in “Service Processor Assembly” on page 312.10. Before handling any card, board, or memory DIMM, touch any metal surface of the chassis with onehand to minimize static electricity discharge. Refer to “Handling Static-Sensitive Devices” on page280.11. Remove the memory DIMM by pushing the tabs out and then down. The tabs’ lever action forces thememory DIMM out of the connector.12. Pull the memory DIMM out of the connector as shown in the following illustration.1211 Connector Tabs (unlocked position)2 Memory DIMMReplacing or Installing Memory DIMMsTo replace a memory DIMM, do the following:Chapter 9.
