Viewing alarms in the Alarm Monitor 237Throttling events (reducing the frequency of events)Event throttling lets you control the frequency with which the same eventis recorded by the event log and appears in the Event Browser, AlarmMonitor, and Windows Event Viewer. This prevents these windows and theevent log from becoming overcrowded. If too many instances of each eventare recorded, there might not be enough space in the event log to recordmore important events. Also, viewing too many instances of each event canoverwhelm users, causing them to overlook important events.Filtering by changing event propertiesYou might want to override the default severity or throttling parameters ofany event code for the following reasons:• to increase the severity of an event (for example, from information tominor) so that the event is displayed in the Alarm Monitor when it occurs• to reduce the severity of a recurring alarm to information so that theevent does not appear in the Alarm Monitor• to set the throttling parameters to reduce the frequency an event isgeneratedPrevious occurrences of the event are not affected. You can revert to thedefault event definition at any time by deleting the customized versionof the event.Viewing alarms in the Alarm MonitorThe Alarm Monitor displays a list of CallPilot server alarms. Alarms arewarnings generated by events. Alarms communicate the same informationas events. However, alarms are reported in the Alarm Monitor instead of theEvent Browser, and are managed differently than events:• Alarms appear in the Alarm Monitor only for minor, major, and criticalevents (not information events). All events can be reported in the EventBrowser (depending on filtering criteria defined in the Event Browser)• The first time an event occurs, it generates an alarm that appears inthe Alarm Monitor. If the same event continues to occur, a new alarmis not generated. Instead, the time and date assigned to the originalgenerated alarm is updated.• If you generate an event several times, with the same Object ID and thesame Instance, then the event appears only once in the Alarm Monitor.• If you customize events in the Event Browser, those changes do affectthe Alarm Monitor. For example, if an event severity is changed fromminor to information, the event does not generate an alarm. Also, ifan event severity is changed from minor to major, the severity of thegenerated alarm is major.Nortel CallPilotAdministrator GuideNN44200-601 01.11 Standard5.0 9 November 2007Copyright © 2007, Nortel Networks.
