11. Connect the other end of the battery cable or flash power module cable to thebattery or flash power module.12. Reinstall the retention clip to secure the battery or flash power module inplace.ResultsIf you have other devices to install or remove, do so now. Otherwise, go to“Completing the installation” on page 129.Installing an additional microprocessor and heat sinkThis information provides instructions on how to install an additionalmicroprocessor and heat sink.About this taskThe following notes describe the type of microprocessor that the server supportsand other information that you must consider when you install a microprocessorand heat sink:v Be extremely careful. The microprocessor socket contacts are very fragile.v The server base system board supports two microprocessors, and the optionalmicroprocessor and memory expansion tray provides two additionalmicroprocessor slots plus 24 additional DIMM connectors. The server supportsup to four Intel Xeon four-core, six-core, or eight-core microprocessors(depending on your model) with the microprocessor and memory expansiontray installed. To confirm that the server supports the microprocessor, seehttp://www.ibm.com/systems/info/x86servers/serverproven/compat/us/ for alist of supported microprocessors.v A microprocessor air baffle must be installed whenever the two DIMMconnectors closest to the microprocessor (on the left and the right) are empty. For example, when DIMM connectors 6 and 7 on the system board are empty, amicroprocessor air baffle must be installed on microprocessor 1. This isapplicable for all microprocessors.v Microprocessors 3 and 4 must be installed as a pair on the optionalmicroprocessor and memory expansion tray.Note: The server does not support a configuration of three microprocessors. Youmust install one, two, or four microprocessors in the server.v Do not mix four-core, six-core, and eight-core microprocessors in the sameserver.v The microprocessor options that IBM supports are limited by the capacity andcapability of the server. Any additional microprocessor that you install musthave the same specifications as the microprocessors that came with the server.v You must always have a microprocessor in socket 1 on the system board.v When one microprocessor is installed, the microprocessor air baffle, the DIMMair baffle, or the microprocessor and memory expansion tray must be installed toprovide proper system cooling.v When you install an additional microprocessor, you must also install additionalmemory. See “Non-mirroring (independent mode)” on page 46, “Memorymirroring” on page 46, and “Memory sparing” on page 48 for details aboutDIMM installation sequence.Chapter 2. Installing optional devices 95
