Installing the 8x1.8-inch hot-swap drive backplane assemblyThis information provides instructions on how to install the 8x1.8-inch hot-swapdrive backplane assembly.About this taskNote:v For more information about connecting the SAS signal cables to the drivebackplane, see “Connecting the SAS cables” on page 64.v When you install a 8x1.8-inch drive backplane assembly, the drive IDs that areindicated on the server front bezel will no longer be valid. Use the drive labelsthat come with the backplane to renumber the drive IDs on the bezel.v The right-angle SAS cables that come with the backplane only connects to theSAS connectors on the system board.v For more information about drive IDs, see “Drive IDs” on page 54. For moreinformation about the supported drive backplane configurations, see “SupportedSAS/SATA drive backplane configurations” on page 56.To install the 8x1.8-inch hot-swap drive backplane assembly, complete thefollowing steps:Procedure1. Read the safety information and installation guidelines, see “Safety” on pagevii and “Installation guidelines” on page 35.2. Turn off the server (see “Turning off the server” on page 22) and all attachedperipheral devices. Disconnect all power cords; then, disconnect all externalcables from the server.3. Remove the top cover (see “Removing the server top cover” on page 38).4. Remove the fan cage assembly (see “Removing the fan cage assembly” onpage 42).5. Remove the microprocessor and memory expansion tray (see “Removing themicroprocessor and memory expansion tray assembly” on page 305) or DIMMair baffle (see “Removing the DIMM air baffle” on page 232), whichever one isinstalled.6. Open the SAS cable guide cover.7. Remove the drive bay fillers from the front of the server for the bays that areassociated with the backplane bay in which you are installing the backplane.8. If a backplane filler panel is installed in the backplane bays in which you areinstalling the backplane assembly, remove the backplane filler panel.9. Align the backplane assembly with the backplane bay in which you areinstalling the assembly.Chapter 2. Installing optional devices 113
