Measure the open-circuit voltage prior tocharging.TIPVoltage should be measured 30 minutes afterthe engine is stopped.b. Connect a charged and ammeter to thebattery and start charging.TIPSet the charging voltage at 16–17 V. If the set-ting is lower, charging will be insufficient. If toohigh, the battery will be over-charged.c. Make sure that the current is higher thanthe standard charging current written onthe battery.TIPIf the current is lower than the standard charg-ing current written on the battery, set thecharging voltage adjust dial at 20–24 V andmonitor the amperage for 3–5 minutes tocheck the battery.d. Adjust the voltage so that the current is atthe standard charging level.e. Set the time according to the charging timesuitable for the open-circuit voltage.f. If charging requires more than 5 hours, it isadvisable to check the charging currentafter a lapse of 5 hours. If there is anychange in the amperage, readjust the volt-age to obtain the standard charging cur-rent.g.
