CRANKSHAFT5-87d. Put a piece of Plastigauge® “1” on eachcrankshaft journal.TIPDo not put the Plastigauge® over the oil hole inthe crankshaft journal.e. Install the crankshaft journal lower bear-ings “1” into the lower crankcase andassemble the crankcase halves.TIP• Align the projections “a” of the crankshaftjournal lower bearings with the notches “b” inthe lower crankcase.• Do not move the crankshaft until the clear-ance measurement has been completed.f. Tighten the bolts to specification in thetightening sequence cast on the crankcase.Refer to “CRANKCASE” on page 5-70.g. Remove the lower crankcase and thecrankshaft journal lower bearings.h. Measure the compressed Plastigauge®width “a” on each crankshaft journal. If the crankshaft-journal-to-crankshaft-jour-nal-bearing clearance is out of specifica-tion, select replacement crankshaft journalbearings.▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲4. Select:• Crankshaft journal bearings (J1 –J5 )TIP• The numbers “A” stamped into the crank-shaft web and the numbers “B” stamped intothe lower crankcase are used to determinethe replacement crankshaft journal bearingsizes.• J 1–J5 refer to the bearings shown in thecrankshaft illustration.• If J1 –J 5 are the same, use the same size forall of the bearings. For example, if the crankcase J1 and crank-shaft web J 1 numbers are 5 and 2 respec-tively, then the bearing size for J1 is:J 1 (crankcase) - J 1 (crankshaft web) =5 - 2 = 3 (brown)Bearing color code1.Blue 2.Black 3.Brown4.Green 5.Yellow
