3 - 56CHKADJCHECKING THE BATTERY Check the condition of the battery using thefollowing charts.Example: Open-circuit voltage = 12.0 V Charging time = 6.5 hours Charge condition of the battery = 20 ~ 30% Charging method for MF batteriesCAUTION: If it is impossible to set the standardcharging current, be careful not toovercharge. When charging the battery, be sure toremove it from the motorcycle. (Ifcharging has to be done with the batterymounted on the motorcycle, be sure todisconnect the wire at the negativeterminal.) Never remove the sealing caps of an MFbattery. Make sure that the charging clips are infull contact with the terminal and that theyare not shorted together. (A corroded clipon the charger may cause the battery togenerate heat in the contact area. A weakclip spring may cause sparks.) Before removing the clips from thebattery terminals, be sure to turn off thecharger’s power switch. The open-circuit voltage variation for theMF battery, after charging, is shownbelow. As shown in the figure, the open-circuit voltage stabilizes about 30minutes after charging has beencompleted. Therefore, wait 30 minutesafter charging is completed beforemeasuring the open-circuit voltage.Open-circuitvoltage Charging time12.8 V or higher No charging isnecessary.
