202 DRIVING AND OPERATINGThe vehicle has an Electric ParkingBrake (EPB). The EPB can always beactivated, even if the ignition is off. Toprevent draining the battery, avoidrepeated cycles of the EPB systemwhen the engine is not running.The system has a Y or PARKElectric Parking Brake light, and a 8Service Parking Brake light.See Electric Parking Brake Light 0 128and Service Electric Parking Brake Light0 128.Before leaving the vehicle, check forthe Y or PARK light to ensure thatthe parking brake is applied.EPB ApplyTo apply the EPB:1. Be sure the vehicle is at acomplete stop.2. Lift up the EPB switchmomentarily.The Y or PARK light will flash andthen stay on once the EPB is fullyapplied. If the Y or PARK lightflashes continuously, then the EPB isonly partially applied or there is aproblem with the EPB. A DIC messagewill display. Release the EPB and tryto apply it again. If the light does notcome on, or keeps flashing, have thevehicle serviced. Do not drive thevehicle if the Y or PARK light isflashing. See your dealer. See ElectricParking Brake Light 0 128.If the 8 light is on, pull the EPBswitch and hold it. Continue to holdthe switch until the Y or PARK lightremains on. If the 8 light remains on,see your dealer.If the EPB is applied while the vehicleis moving, the vehicle will decelerateas long as the switch is pressed. If theswitch is pressed until the vehiclecomes to a stop, the EPB will remainapplied.The vehicle may automatically applythe EPB in some situations when thevehicle is not moving. This is normal,and is done to periodically check thecorrect operation of the EPB system.If the EPB fails to apply, block the rearwheels to prevent vehicle movement.EPB ReleaseTo release the EPB:1. Turn the ignition on or to ACC/ACCESSORY.2. Apply and hold the brake pedal.3. Press the EPB switchmomentarily.The EPB is released when the Y orPARK light is off.If the 8 light is on, release the EPB bypressing and holding the EPB switch.Continue to hold the switch untilthe Y or PARK light is off. If eitherlight stays on after release isattempted, see your dealer.CautionDriving with the parking brake oncan overheat the brake system andcause premature wear or damage tobrake system parts. Make sure thatthe parking brake is fully releasedand the brake warning light is offbefore driving.
