DRIVING AND OPERATING 203Automatic EPB ReleaseThe EPB will automatically release ifthe vehicle is running, placed intogear, and an attempt is made to driveaway. Avoid rapid acceleration whenthe EPB is applied, to preserve parkingbrake lining life.Brake AssistThis vehicle has a brake assist featuredesigned to assist the driver instopping or decreasing vehicle speedin emergency driving conditions. Thisfeature uses the stability systemhydraulic brake control module tosupplement the power brake systemunder conditions where the driver hasquickly and forcefully applied thebrake pedal in an attempt to quicklystop or slow down the vehicle. Thestability system hydraulic brakecontrol module increases brakepressure at each corner of the vehicleuntil the ABS activates. Minor brakepedal pulsation or pedal movementduring this time is normal and thedriver should continue to apply thebrake pedal as the driving situationdictates. The brake assist feature willautomatically disengage when thebrake pedal is released or brake pedalpressure is quickly decreased.Hill Start Assist (HSA)Hill Start Assist (HSA) will activatewhen the vehicle is stopped on amoderate to steep grade to helpprevent it from rolling in theunintended direction. After the brake pedal has beenreleased and before the acceleratorpedal has been pressed, HSA usesbraking pressure to hold the vehiclestationary. If HSA is holding the vehicle, a DICmessage displays. The vehicle will roll if in a drive gearand facing downhill, or in R (Reverse)and facing uphill.Once HSA is active it will hold thevehicle, unless the driver door isopened or the driver seat belt isunbuckled prior to releasing the brakepedal.Ride Control SystemsTraction Control/ElectronicStability ControlThe vehicle has a Traction ControlSystem (TCS) and StabiliTrak, anelectronic stability control system. These systems help limit wheel slipand assist the driver in maintainingcontrol, especially on slippery roadconditions.TCS activates if it senses that any ofthe drive wheels are spinning orbeginning to lose traction. When thishappens, the system brakes thespinning wheel(s) and/or reducesengine power to limit wheel spin.StabiliTrak activates when thecomputer senses a difference betweenthe intended path and the directionthe vehicle is actually traveling.StabiliTrak selectively applies brakingpressure at any one of the vehicle'sbrakes to help steer the vehicle in theintended direction.
