Working with Network Plans 59Nortel WLAN—Management Software 2300 Series Reference GuideWorking with Network PlansA network plan is the workspace in WLAN Management Software you use to design a Nortel network. In a networkplan, you define components of the network (WSSs, APs, and optionally third-party access points). Regardless ofwhether you intend to use physical planning features, you must create a network plan before you can configure ormanage WSSs or monitor network data.A network plan allows modular management of large networks based on organizational or geographical boundaries. Forexample, a network plan can represent a campuswide network. If you install the license key for physical planning, youalso can define a physical representation of the network (sites, buildings, and floors). In this case, you can importdrawings of your floor plans into the network plan or draw plan details manually. You can then identify the RF charac-teristics by importing data from a site survey or by manually identifying RF objects.Nortel recommends that you limit a network plan to a single campus or Mobility Domain (Nortel network domain).Different countries have different regulatory limits for 802.11 radios. Setting the country code in the network plan auto-matically enforces the appropriate regulatory limits for all configured radios. The greatest geographical scope for anetwork plan is a country, because a network plan is based on one specific country code.Creating a Network Plan1 Select Services > Plan Management to access the WLAN Management Software Plan Managementpage.2 Click New Plan in the left column to display the New Plan page.3 In the Network Plan Name box, type a name for the network plan. You can use 1 to 60 alphanumericcharacters, with no spaces, tabs, or any of the following: slash (/), backslash (\), quotation marks (“ ”),asterisk (*), question mark (?), angle brackets (< >), or vertical bar (|).Creating a Network Plan . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 59Managing Network Plans . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 61Defining a Mobility Domain . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 66Creating a WSS . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 69Creating a Third-Party AP . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 69Changing the Country Code . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 70Applying the Network’s Auto-RF Settings to the Network Plan . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 71Configuring AirDefense . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 72Uploading a WSS into the Network Plan . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 74Converting Auto DAPs into Statically Configured APs . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 74Creating a Network Domain . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 75
