Chapter 2Getting StartedThe installation documentation that is shipped with each unit describes the procedurefor connecting to the FRM from a local or remote keyboard and video device. Oncethis has been done, the FRM must be customized for the devices to which it willconnect, the traffic it will receive and transmit, and various operating parameters thatcan be set to your specific needs.Quick StartThe basic steps you should take to get the FRM up and running are:1. Read the remainder of this chapter, as it explains the user interface on an FRM.This information will help you understand the menu operations that are necessaryto configure the FRM for your application.2. Review the default database parameter settings, listed in tables throughoutSection II. (A list of tables can be found in the Table of Contents.) Many param-eters can be left at the default settings, but some must be reconfigured to matchyour specific needs.3. Fill in Table 2-1 (on page 2-3), to identify the physical interface, protocol, andconnected device on each physical port. You will need more information whenconfiguring database records, but these tables can be used as convenient refer-ences.4. Log into the menu operations, if not already done. This is described in the FRMInstallation & Setup Guide, as well as on page 2-4.5. Set the correct date and time, as described on page 2-9. Event messages, reports, and some displays include the current date and time as set in the FRM. Theyshould be accurate, for proper network monitoring and management.6. Change the login password, if desired. The default password is NETLINK. Youcan change this to any password of up to 14 characters, as described on page 2-9.7. Configure the necessary database records: Node (Chapter 4), SNMP parameters(Chapter 16) if SNMP management will be performed, RLPs and protocols(Chapter 5), network ports (frame relay – Chapter 7) or X.25 – Chapter 8), plusLAN interfaces and legacy access ports (miscellaneous chapters in Section II).
