To preventov erheating of the transmission, do notincrease engine revolutions to ensuresmooth idling while standing if a gea r ha sbeen selected.Switch off engine if stopping for a lengthyperiod, e.g. in traffic jams or at lev elcrossings.If the selector lever is not in position P whenthe ignition is switched off, controlindica tor j in the selector lever indicatorstrip will flash – see page 187, Fig. 13134 J.Before leaving the vehicle, app ly handbrake, then place selector lever in positionP and rem ov e ignition key.The ignition key can only be removed whenthe selector lever is in position P.If the ignition key is not removed, thebattery m ay be discharged if the vehicle isthen left to stand for a lengthy period oftim e.FaultC ontrol indicator A illuminates if a faultoccurs.Driving ca n be c ontinued:The choice of transm ission ra tio isrestricted .
