9W006 and 9W007 19T HE SMART SWITCH R EMOTE ACCESS M ODULEUnique System Features• Dial Out CapabilityThe system will dial out to remote devices. This feature allows the system to accept user datareceived on the Ethernet LAN or ISDN network and initiate a data connection to the remotedevice specified in the user data. This allows devices on the local LAN to initiate connectionsto networks connected to the system over the switched digital network. The system monitorsthe connection for utilization and will remove the connection when it becomes idle.• Digital ModemThe system becomes an analog modem pool through its digital modem option. The systemsupports analog modem calls for high density channelized T1 lines using Robbed-BitSignaling. It also supports 56Kbps digital modem technology (K56flex) with auto negotiationto automatically adapt to various modem speeds. The digital modem adapter consists of bothhardware and software elements to support up to 48/60 analog and/or digital connections ineach dual-slot module.• Dynamic ManagementProvides a “real-time” management mechanism that allows many system parameters to bechanged without interrupting the current execution state of the system software. This featureconsists of a series of console commands that enable a user to display current systemparameters, change many parameters dynamically, and write changes to disk files so that theyremain permanent.• High Speed Digital ConnectionsThe system supports 56Kbps and 64Kbps connections to remote locations. These dial-up digitalconnections provide reliable high throughput connections for efficient data transfer for thesame cost as analog connections. If any remote devices connected to the system support multi-link PPP, up to 32 parallel connections can be made at either 56Kbps or 64Kbps.• Hot Swappable ModulesSmartSwitch Remote Access Modules are hot swappable. SFVRA Configuration Manager(VRA-CFG) can retain the configuration and setup of the module and automatically downloadthe required information to a replacement module.• Inverse MultiplexingThe modules provide inverse multiplexing for both ISDN and analog modem connectionssupporting an aggregated bandwidth in multiples of 56/64Kbps.• Layer 3 Switching SupportThe SmartSwitch Remote Access Modules provide layer 3 switching support for IP, IPX, andAppleTalk. Also provided is multiprotocol layer 2 switching.• Packet CaptureIn order to monitor incoming LAN data, the SmartSwitch Remote Access Module packetcapture feature will allow you to capture, display, save, and load bridged or routed datapackets.• Protocol DiscriminationIt is possible for multiple types of remote devices to use the same line. The system candetermine the device type and the protocol encapsulation used by remote devices.
