VEHICLE CARE 319The positive jump start connection forthe discharged battery is under a redcover. Remove the cover to expose theterminal.1. Check the other vehicle. It musthave a 12-volt battery with anegative ground system.CautionIf the other vehicle does not have a12-volt system with a negativeground, both vehicles can bedamaged. Only use a vehicle thathas a 12-volt system with anegative ground for jump starting.2. Position the two vehicles so thatthey are not touching.3. Set the parking brake firmly andput the shift lever in P (Park)with an automatic transmission,or Neutral with a manualtransmission. See Shifting IntoPark (Automatic Transmission)0 194 with an automatictransmission, or Parking (ManualTransmission) 0 196 with amanual transmission.CautionIf any accessories are left on orplugged in during the jump startingprocedure, they could be damaged.The repairs would not be coveredby the vehicle warranty. Wheneverpossible, turn off or unplug allaccessories on either vehicle whenjump starting.4. Turn the ignition off. Turn off alllights and accessories in bothvehicles, except the hazardwarning flashers if needed.{ WarningAn electric fan can start up evenwhen the engine is not running andcan injure you. Keep hands,clothing, and tools away from anyunderhood electric fan.{ WarningUsing a match near a battery cancause battery gas to explode. Peoplehave been hurt doing this, andsome have been blinded. Use aflashlight if you need more light.Battery fluid contains acid that canburn you. Do not get it on you.If you accidentally get it in youreyes or on your skin, flush the placewith water and get medical helpimmediately.{ WarningFans or other moving engine partscan injure you badly. Keep yourhands away from moving partsonce the engine is running.5. Connect one end of the redpositive (+) cable to thepositive (+) terminal on thedischarged battery.
