The service engineer might beable to repair the bad records and perform a successful copy. Theverification operation is executed on that portion of the drive selected fromthe VERIFY OPTIONS: menu.If the verify operation detects bad records, the records are displayed in CBmessages. Refer to section 9.4.6 for instructions about adding the badsectors to the bad-sector table.9.6 OTHER SYSTEM UTILITIESSeveral other utilities are available to the service engineer, including the following: Drive tests Read-only operation on drive Terminal type selection9.6.1 Drive TestsThe drive-test utility performs a read-write test on all free sectors. Drivetests do not write over existing data or messages.Unless the free-space table is updated by runninggarbage collect, performing a drive test on a drive thatcontains data or messages could cause data or messagesto be overwritten. Before performing a drive test, rungarbage collect on the drive to be tested. The secondpass of garbage collect updates the free-space table.Caution!Perform the following steps to run a drive test:1. Enter the drive-test utility by typing ^DT at the ENTER BOOTCOMMAND: prompt. The following prompt is displayed:DRIVE TEST: ENTER TYPE (S, M, OR L):2. Enter an S, M, or L. Enter S for a short test, which executes a readon one sector only. Enter M for a medium test, which performs readoperations on five available sectors. Enter L for a long test, whichperforms read operations on all available sectors.The following prompt appears:SINGLE OR CONTINUOUS (S OR C):3. Enter an S or a C. A single test instructs the IPL to complete onepass of tests. A continuous test instructs the IPL to run tests untilthe field engineer aborts the test. Abort a continuous test by typing^C. The IPL completes the current pass of tests before aborting thecontinuous test.
