8-33LOWR Lower unitSelecting the pinion shim (T3)• Spray anti-rust lubricant on the bearingbefore installation. Do not apply gear oil tothe parts. Otherwise, correct measure-ments cannot be obtained.• Keep the parts free of foreign material,such as dirt and lint.Do not damage the measurement planesurface of the pinion height gauge, other-wise accurate measurements cannot beobtained.1. Hold the special service tool a, and theninstall the drive shaft b, thrust bearingc, and drive shaft housing assembly tothe tool.TIP:• Do not install the shim(s) (T3) or O-ring.Make sure to check the thrust bearing outerrace since the shim(s) (T3) sometimesbecome affixed to the race.• Make sure to install the thrust bearing outerrace so that it is facing in the same directionas when it was removed.• Make sure that the cutout a in the driveshaft housing assembly is facing the oppo-site side from the plate b of the specialservice tool.2.
