8-57LOWR Lower unit3. Check the dog clutch, shift rod joint, andslider. Replace if cracked or worn.Assembling the propeller shafthousing assemblyDo not reuse the bearing, always replaceit with a new one.1. Install the needle bearing and oil seals.See “Assembling the propeller shafthousing assembly” (8-12) step 1 andstep 2.2. Install the original shim(s) (T4) a andthrust bearing b with the propeller shaft.3. Install a new taper roller bearing c andthe bearing outer race d into thepropeller shaft housing.4. After installing the taper roller bearingand bearing outer race, check that thepropeller shaft rotates smoothly.5. Install the thrust washer f, forward gearg, and dog clutch h.TIP:Install the dog clutch h with the “F” mark afacing toward the forward gear.6. After installing the forward gear, checkthat the propeller shaft and forward gearrotates smoothly.7. Install the spring i, balls j, k, l, shiftslider m, and shift rod joint n.8.
