8-39LOWR Lower unit8. Check that the drive shaft rotatessmoothly. If the drive shaft does notrotate smoothly, reduce the shim(s) (T1)thickness by 0.1 mm, and then check thatthe rotation of the shaft again.9. Install the original shim(s) (T2) g in thelower case.TIP:• If the original shim(s) (T2) are missing, install new shim(s) (T2) with a combinedthickness of 0.62 mm.• Do not reuse a shim if it is any deformed orscratched.10. Install the propeller shaft housingassembly h and key i.TIP:When assembling the lower unit to measurethe backlash, do not install the dog clutch andO-ring.11. Install the claw washer. Check that theposition b is set in place properly.12. Install the ring nut, and then tighten thering nut to the specified torque.13. Check that the drive shaft rotatessmoothly. If the drive shaft does notrotate smoothly, the shim(s) may beinstalled incorrectly or there may beforeign material on the shim(s).14. Measure the forward gear backlash. See“Measuring the forward and reverse gearbacklash before disassembly” (8-28).Adjusting the forward gear shimthickness (T1)1. Remove the taper roller bearing outerrace.
