8-70Shimming (counter rotation model)012345678910ATIP:• The resistance of the spring increases theforce required to turn the drive shaft. There-fore, to obtain correct measurements, con-sider the spring resistance force whenturning the drive shaft.• Do not turn the drive shaft with excessiveforce, otherwise the forward gear will rotate, leading to incorrect measurements.12. Turn the drive shaft 180° clockwise andmeasure the backlash again.TIP:• Measure the backlash at 4 points: d, e,f, and g, turning the drive shaft 180°clockwise after each measurement. Notethe measurement data in the shimmingcheck sheet.• When turning the drive shaft, hold it with alittle force. A knocking sound may be heardwhen the drive shaft is rotated, but this isthe sound of the pinion contacting thereverse gear and does not affect the back-lash measurement.13. Determine the backlash average, andthen truncate it by dropping the numbersafter the 1/100 place without rounding.Example:14. Check that the forward gear backlashaverage is within specification.TIP:Adjust the shim thicknesses if the forwardgear backlash is out of specification.15. Remove the special service tools fromthe propeller shaft.16. Remove the propeller shaft housingassembly. See “Removing the propellershaft housing assembly” (8-55).17.
