2-2Adaptec Ultra320 SCSI Cards User’s GuideUsing SCSI DevicesIf you connect SCSI devices (such as scanners, tape drives, zipdrives, etc.) to your Adaptec SCSI Card, you must install the devicemanufacturer’s proprietary software drivers. See your device’sdocumentation for details.Using SCSI Hard Disk Drives If you connect a SCSI hard disk drive to an Adaptec SCSI Cardthat was previously connected to a different SCSI card, it isrecommended that you low-level format the drive before youuse it. Back up the data on the drive before moving the drive tothe new SCSI card and before you format the drive. (See UsingSCSI Disk Utilities on page 3-16 for information on using theSCSISelect format utility.)Caution: A low-level format destroys all data on the drive.Be sure to back up the data before performing a low-levelformat. Every SCSI hard disk drive must be physically low-levelformatted, partitioned, and logically formatted before it can beused to store data. Most SCSI drives are preformatted at thefactory. If your SCSI hard disk drive has not been preformattedat the factory, and if your computer is running under DOS, youcan prepare the disk with the DOS Fdisk and Formatcommands. (See the DOS and Windows documentation formore information.) To format SCSI hard disk drives runningunder other operating systems, see the operating systemdocumentation.!
